 +====== Basis Thrust Actions ======
 +
 +This page outlines the action of the thrust in *tierce* and *quarte*. I concentrate here on the gross body movement rather than the manipulation of the blade or hand orientation. There's plenty to get right before we start playing with those aspects.
 +
 +This [[https://youtu.be/Y4uKQj-GuJs|video]] is as much as to check and correct my execution of the techniques as it is to show them to others.

 +//Thrust Mechanics - Deploying the Arm, Pied Ferme and Lunge//
 +
 +{{typcn>info-large}} Always include the recovery as part of the exercise. The full sequence is alway:
 +
 +  - Deploy the arm
 +  - Extend the rear leg (step forward with the front foot on a lunge)
 +  - Extend (or withdraw) the front leg
 +  - Withdraw the arm
 +
 +Maintaining the arm deployed until the final step of the sequence keeps you covered until you are out of distance/measure. If you withdraw the arm before withdrawing the body, you create a big juicy target for your opponent to counter-attack.
 +
 +===== Deploying the Arm =====
 +
 +The arm is deployed as the first movement in all thrust actions. It is basically a snap from the shoulder. The key muscle groups involved are the deltoid and the tricep; nothing else should move.
 +
 +The most common mistake -- especially for the deskbound computer worker -- is lifting the shoulder using the neck muscles (upper trapezoids?). This not only weakens the movement but provides a significant tell which your opponent may pick up on.
 +
 +===== Pied Ferme (Firm Foot) =====
 +
 +Notice that at full extension, the front shoulder, front knee and front foot align nearly vertically. If anything, I extended forward a little too much. The rear leg is fully straightened and there's a straight line between the rear foot, rear knee/hip and rear shoulder. My head is protected by the hilt of the sword.
 +
 +The rear arm may either be thrown backwards for balance or brought forward to protect the face and chest.
 +
 +The sword should always move first and the body moves behind it.
 +
 +===== Lunge =====
 +
 +This lunge is nowhere near as deep as other examples of lunges in the Italian tradition. Both - but particularly Paternoster - advocate for a more upright position and speak against the lunge with the "extraordinary step" that other masters teach.
